Golden Eagle Feather
English:
“The Great Mother is life through and through, she is patient and waits because life grows in a natural way.” – Gaia via Sharon McErlane in A Call to Power, around p. 63
Our lesson in “what life is” continues! (I am still picking these pages at random and for at least three days running, I have randomly chosen passages that talk about the nature of life.)
Life grows in a natural way. Yang-energy, when it is not balanced with yin, forgets this fundamental truth. Some people insist that the economy needs to grow at a certain percentage per year. This makes sense in a man-made world, but it makes no sense for life – and this statement ignores the fact that we humans are also part of the natural world.
We expect ourselves also to conform to this linear model of growth, but life is not linear. Life is circular. Life grows according to the principles of yin, not the principles of yang. But if we don’t understand yin energy, we mistakenly think that we need to build our lives as if they were a building, one brick on top of the other.
We forget one small detail: people are not buildings. Life is not a business. Life does not start out happy, only to get more and more happy until we die, happiest of all. The very thought is ridiculous. You can apply the same thought to mental, emotional or spiritual growth. We cause ourselves so much stress by thinking that life is supposed to be linear!
When left alone, children as well as adults grow in spurts. We have seasons of growth and seasons of rest, seasons of joy and seasons of sadness. That is life. We have times when we are highly charged and in action, and times when we do practically nothing. We do not need to feel guilty about doing nothing! If you observe the natural world, you will see precisely the same daily and yearly rhythms. The Grandmothers’ message of balance between yin and yang gives us the permission we need to return to a more natural, much happier state.
Today and in the future, notice what happens if you just follow the ups and downs of your own body. Notice when you start working when your body would rather rest, and when you sit still when you would rather be in action. If you don’t know what you feel, then practice sitting still and just noticing the sensations in your body. Notice how your mind – and fear – play a role in your willingness to stop, slow down, or rest.
Wishing you a natural day,
Golden Eagle Feather
